In mid-summer, the sun never sets high in the polar Arctic. Photojournalist Michael Powers and Ocean Studio Alliance adventure filmmaker Mark Fraser joined members of the Bodo Kayakk Klubb from Bodo, Norway and two armed guards from the Svalbard Wildlife Services for an exploratory sea kayaking expedition to St. Jonsfjord in the remote western region of the Svalbard archipelago, far north of Norway. It’s a world of ice and extraordinary concentrations of wildlife – an environment highly susceptible to the effects of global warming. A reindeer skull and antlers provide context for the group as it passes some of the stunning scenery.
