Remembering Marilyn Buckle
The kayaking community of Vancouver Island suffered a great loss with the sudden passing of Marilyn Buckle on October 24th 2006. Anyone who has paddled across from Tofino to the Vargas Island Inn will remember Marilyn’s singsong voice welcoming them, proclaiming “There’s no place like Vargas!” Marilyn and her husband Neil moved to Vargas Island in the 1970s, after the inn they had been running on Long Beach was expropriated to become national park. The lodge that they built on Vargas, out of timber hewn and milled on the property, first was the family home from which they raised their three sons. Since then, it has been the refuge and source of happy memories for many a kayaker. Neil and family handyman Larry are staying on Vargas and, in the spirit that Marilyn always exuded to all, will continue to welcome paddlers to the Inn.

Marilyn Buckle was a unique presence in this world: a mother, a wife, and a dear friend, and at the same time she was one of the last pioneers in this modern world. Her physical presence is missed sorely, by family, friends and visitors, but we all know that her spirit will always remain on Vargas Island. “Why go to heaven, when heaven is right here?”

Hello from Germany
I paddled this year from August to September around Vancouver Island. The picture shows me the evening before rounding Cape Scott at Experiment Bay on August the 20th. It was the most beautiful journey I ever did. WaveLength Magazine online helped me to get a lot of information and to find some new friends too. This is only one of more than 1500 pictures I took and it is not one of the best. But it shows me reading your magazine and I want to say thank you very much to you all at WaveLength. It was not my last trip in BC and I look forward to coming back. Thank you!
