On Celtic Tides-One Man's Journey Around Ireland by Sea Kayak, by Chris Duff Chris Duff grabs the reader's attention immediately. He has the uncanny ability to put into the print medium the exact thoughts and feelings many of us experience during our own paddling pursuits but would be hard pressed to so eloquently express. This book is very much a simultaneous journey within, as well as around Ireland. From the gripping, descriptive accounts of the immense challenge of paddling the rugged Irish coast, to his destination of spiritual understanding amidst the backdrop of ancestral meandering, the reader is swept along by tides of brooding emotion that have always been part of Ireland's history. Eric Soares & Michael Powers, veteran members of the legendary extreme kayaking group, the Tsunami Rangers, depict the dangers and excitement of extreme sea kayaking and describe how to do it as safely as possible. They explain paddling techniques: bracing, recovery and rescue maneuvers, handsignals, open sea survival, and how to judge surf conditions. The entertaining exploits and spectacular photographs show the spirit, courage and lust for life of these adventurous kayakers. |
Review by Bryan Nichols Local boy Andy Lamb's "Coastal Fishes..." is the book to get if you like fish. It's been around for 13 years and has now been reprinted. Concentrating only on Northwest fish, it covers darn near all of them, and mentions those it doesn't. The line drawings are excellent and the information is fun and informative-for each fish there are notes for divers, shore observers (which best helps kayakers), fishers and gourmets. The color photos at the beginning are excellent-my only complaint would be that there is little or no information on coloration with the line drawings. Still, it is invaluable for kayakers interested in fish, and will tell you who's who if you ever venture below the waves as well. |
