If they had been any more hospitable, I might never have left. The incredibly cool owners of Villas de Loreto in Baja were so accommodating during the two weeks I spent there last winter, that I didn't want to come home.
'Can I stay here forever?', I asked Ron and Wendy that sunny afternoon my flight was due to leave for Canada. As they shook their heads, I dec ided that, well, at least I'd be back next year.
And so I'm off to the Baja again, this time for a full winter of sea kayak guidng and general frolicking. Much of the frolicking that I'm looking forward to will happen back at Villas. Ron and Wendy are particularly fond of sea kayakers (thank goodness) and they have a fleet of boats on site, ready to rent. Their in-house guide, Manuel is also available to lead kayak trips in the area. And what an area it is the Loreto National Marine Park is literally at Villas' doorstep which means that Coronado Island, Isla Carmen and Isla Danzante are just a short paddle away.
After a few weeks of kayak guiding though, my main interest will be in the palapa (grass hut) that Ron and Wendy built on an orchard called Rancho Santa Rosa, just outside of town. I plan to rent a mountain bike from Villas and kick up some dust in the Baja desert on my way to Santa Rosa.
I'll be spending a night at the palapa and a day lounging in the shade of the fruit trees mango, lime, avocados and oranges. Ron and Wendy have even said they'll be happy to pick me up from the orchard, if my belly is too full of fruit for the ride back!
If a holiday at Villas do Loreto lovely oceanside resort sounds like a good idea, give Ron and Wendy a shout. With the millennium fast approaching, things are already booking up. Contact Villas by phone/fax at 011-52-113-50586 or email at villasdeloreto@loretoweb.com.mx
See you in Baja!
