Alan last seen making a break for it.

Primex of California makes many accessories for paddlers, including a dandy sail which is useful (and fun) any day a bit of breeze entices you to tap its potential. The sail is simple to use and a nice addition to almost any kayak. We managed to put it together and be on the water sailing in about 20 minutes (probably twice the time required by those less technically challenged!)

The concept of kayak sailing is pretty basic-create some resistance and the wind becomes your motor. Even with no previous sailing experience, you can quickly grasp the technique.

The Primex sail is a "vet" of lights weight nylon attached to two slim masts which join at the bottom and attach to a base on the fore deck. The base is a simple clip system that can be adapted to basic deck rigging. No permanent modifications to your precious kayak are required, so have no fears about drilling holes through your deck. (What a thought!)

We found the sail light and easy to control. Simply attach the sheets (control lines) to either side of your paddle shaft with special clips. Turn your paddle to the left, the boat goes to the left. A leash is provided to help ensure your paddle stays with the boat. Merely pushing your paddle forward lowers the sail to the deck.

Kayak sailing is primarily a downwind experience. So remember, if you get a nice blow in one direction, you've got a headwind to deal with on the way back.

That fact became important for us when the wind picked up, and the small islands in the distance all of a sudden loomed large. Had we actually wanted to go in that direction, this wouldn't have been a problem.

Practice is required to avoid swimming, but at least in the event of a capsize, the colourful sail would be highly visible, assuming someone is looking for you.

We really enjoyed it.
