Deer Group option
September-October 1994
This is an article from WaveLength Magazine, available in print in North America and globally on the web.
For those wishing to avoid the some-times congested campsites of the Broken Group, a less crowded option exists, right in Barkley Sound.
Take the Lady Rose to Bamfield (or get dropped at Haggard's Cove) to paddle into the Deer Group and Chain Group Islands, which lie along the south east shore of the Sound. While these islands are not part of the Pacific Rim National Park, they offer many of the same delights as the Broken Group, although no facilities are available. Be sure to read Mary Ann Snowden's notes on these islands in her book, Island Paddling, and respect the native reserves and private properties.
